What is Alpha Gamma Delta and What Does It Mean To Me?
Alpha Gamma Delta. Loving, Leading, Lasting.
When I first came to college, I knew I wanted a community of girls to support me, uplift me, and push me to be my best self. I wanted sweet girls who did not like to party too much and had similar Godly values as me. I have truly found that in Alpha Gamma Delta.
I can hear the screaming words in my head as I type: ALPHA-GAMMA-DELTA HEY-WE-ARE-RED-BUFF-AND-GREEN.... Alpha Gamma Delta was founded by 11 women at Syracuse University: Ethel Distin, Flora Mayer, Georgia Dickover, Estelle Beswick, Emily Butterfield, Edith Kickok, Georgia Chipman, Grace Harter, Mary Snider, Jennie Morris, and Marguerite Shepard.
Alpha Gam's philanthropy is fighting hunger. As a sisterhood we come together and do different community service around our local community whether it be the food bank, packing food for the homeless at a local church. Alpha Gamma Delta "Delta partners with Feeding America and Meals on Wheels to advance our efforts of fighting hunger in North America." Our flower is a red and buff rose with a green asparagus plums fern, our jewel is the pearl, we are the SQUIRRELS, and we are LOVING LEADING AND LASTING.
According to Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, Alpha Gamma Delta's mission is to "impact and enrich our communities by providing essential support for education, philanthropy and leadership." Alpha Gamma Delta's purpose is the most significant to me. My favorite lines of the purpose are "To cherish friendships with but a chosen few and to study the perfecting of those friendships" and "To possess high ideals and to attain somewhat unto them." These lines of the purpose I feel like has what made me want to grow as an Alpha Gamma Delta woman.
Alpha Gamma Delta has impacted my whole college experience. It has provided me with personal development skills by doing ACORN modules on personal development, self growth, self love, and mental health, that the Alpha Gamma Delta IHQ requires. Even though it is required, I have really benefitted from it. 4 years ago entering college, I was an insecure freshman that did not know who I was. I have seen myself change and grow into the person I am today because of Alpha Gamma Delta. It has given me friendships to last a lifetime, laughter to hold on to, pictures in my room to remember who helped me grow, and memories that I will tell my own children one day. Greek Life makes up a lot of one's college experience, but it is all worth the money and time. You get out what you put into it. Say yes to everything even when you feel like sleeping or going home to your parents. As I am wrapping up my time as an Alpha Gamma Delta woman, I am looking back on the time I had with smiles and tears.
